Demonizing Iran

Thu Sep 20, 2007 at 01:02:55 PM PDT

Sometime the only thing you can think is that this nation's leaders have
gone batshit-rabid crazy in their efforts to demonize Iran.

It seems that the controversial Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,
has asked to visit the site of the World Trade Center during his upcoming
visit to address the General Assembly of the UN.  According to Mohammad
Mir Ali Mohammadi, spokesman for the Iranian mission to the UN,

"President Ahmadinejad intended to lay a wreath at the site of ground zero
in order to pay tribute to the victims of the terrorists attack of
September 11, 2001."

Now, that seems like a nice, inoffensive thing to do, a humane gesture and
maybe an overture for peace.  Or maybe the gesture was more for domestic consumption at home in Iran.  But to see the reaction of the
politicians, you'd think Ahmadinejad was really Osama bin Laden, and
instead of laying a wreath, he was going to spray-paint the site with
DEATH TO THE GREAT SATAN.

First They Came for the Armenians

The dispute over the Congressional resolution HR 106, giving recognition to the WWI Armenian genocide, is far from over.  Despite the Anti-Defamation League's national director, Abe Foxman, issuing a half-hearted acknowlegement of the genocidal nature of the events, he still refuses to support the official resolution.

Now a number of news reports are making even stronger links between the Armenian genocide and the persecution of the Jews.

Jews, Neocons and Democrats

There are some voices here who want to shut down all discussion of the
Israeli occupation of Palestine, on the grounds that this subject has
nothing to do with electing Democrats to office. In fact, this issue
is one of the most important to the Democratic Party today, and you
can see the proof of this by looking at the press in Israel, where the
premier newspaper Haaretz runs a regular column on US politics.

The
current issue
features an interview with Gabriel Schoenfeld, who
accuses the Democratic Party of harboring "an anti-Israel caucus
within its ranks."
